Excalibur – A Quick Walkthrough

Another quick little piece that I did recently. This was a bit of a learning curve for me as I realised pretty stupidly that I’ve been painting on the wrong kind of canvas with watercolours. It’s a board used primarily for acrylics, hence why the dots are always an issue when you’re looking for detail.

In case you’re wondering what painting is about; it’s Excalibur from Arthurian legend, stuck inside a stone and in the middle of an old forest. Not quite as haunting as I wanted it to be, but it was fun to try and experiment with some shading.

I started by doing a rough pencil outline of my work area

The black border bit came in straight after. This was layered a number of times to give it a bit more depth.

This is where I started the main colouring. The trees were shaded from black to brown and the background was given a light green tinge

In fairness, this was the happiest I was and probably should have left the background like this. I liked the way there were two shades of green here. But I messed up.

You can spot the mistake with the shading here. Again, this was due to the type of material of the canvas. The definition of the sword started here too.
